Putting the lastest technology to the service of the island.

Technology is playing an increasingly important role in the development of countries and in people’s lives. Being familiar with it means to know how to use it, but also to feel part of the technological revolution. It is crucial for children to have a basic understanding of the latest advances in computer science, how they work, why they are important and how they can use it, change it, and improve it.

Through the implementation of a computer science workshop for kids we want to first teach children the basic principles of technology. Second we want them to empower them to become part of it. Third, we want to help the most talented and motivated to pursue further studies in technology.
We plant a seed of technological curiosity and creativity in children. The participants have hands on experience with technology, where they learn by doing, programming a real robot, the NAO. As a result, technology is demystified, and the students feel capable and empowered.
We developed a 20 days workshop for selected students of Camiguin.During this course the students have learnt computer vision and robotics. All applications the students have programmed were context based in order to preserve and understand the environment of the island. Follow bellow some of the programs the students did.
For selected students of Camiguin Polytechnic State College we developed an introduction to basic robotics, such as programming robot movements, face and speech recognition.
We scaled up the robot demonstration to the five municipalities of the island, in order to present to kids their first opportunity to interact with a real robot.
This project would not be possible without the support of Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems and its Autonomous Motion Department which have lent us the robot for the exercises on robotic computing during the workshop.
