We are Camiguinons
We are just a few now, but we want to be many.
We are just a few now, but we want to be many.
Kilaha is an organization based in Camiguin, which brings together members and friends from different backgrounds, cultures and generations. Some of us have a lot of experience and knowledge of the island; others are young and bring new ideas and determination. Some are specialized on social services, governance or international development while others are experts on deep ocean waters, green jungle forest or in the application of new digital technologies.
What brings us together is the passion for the island. Camiguin is more than an island, it’s an amazing feeling. All of us, members and friends, know how privileged we are to live in this place, unique on this planet. We have in common our will to preserve it and, at the same time, to promote it.
“Kilaha means “learning” and “understanding” in the old local language of the island (Kinamiguin). And that is what it means to us too!!! It is about the process of learning while building eco- alternative paths for the development of the island. In a world of natural depravation Camiguin represents hope. We need to find a fair balance while preserving and promoting this hope. That is our challenge!!! That is what Kilaha is about….”
“Camiguin has changed my life and its people has offered me so much without asking nothing in return. Kilaha is the opportunity to give back to Camiguin the favor. And its my purpose that this opportunity with Kilaha becomes in the best thing happened to Camiguin in the last years. My commitment and the commitment of the members and friends is the engine of this project, and together we will succeed to help Camiguin to become a place free from poverty maintaining the unique natural balance of the island.”
“Quite often I´ve seen several marvelous places transformed in something different in name of the “progress”, where the dust of the cement chokes nature, the plants squeeze in pots, the carmine and fishermen become pool lifeguards or peddlers; and even if you can see “prosperity”, the poverty has transformed into misery. But is not always like this, there are places where development goes in the right direction.
Camiguin is an inspiring place, because the power of its nature and its huge diversity in a tiny place. It´s a dream to have the chance to develop projects to improve the life conditions on harmony with the environment and the simplicity of its inhabitants.”
“At a time when information, technology and a growing population is coming to Camiguin, our Paradise, in a speed of light, it is imperative that we become an active part in the development of this island. Through Kilaha I become part of an innovating community that conceptualizes, implements, and supports projects that keep the heart of Camiguin alive and beating. Together with the members of Kilaha and the community of Camiguin we can forge into the future while ensuring to retain the magic and beauty of Camiguin and its people. With Kilaha I choose to make history by becoming part of the solution on how we can all live and sustain a peaceful and harmonious life with the community and the environment.”
“It will be my pride and commitment to help people of this island to get a better life, respecting their culture, and at the same time preserving the amazing natural space in which we have the privilege to live.”
“Kilaha means understanding, knowing in Kinamiguin language. It is about knowing more about our environment and culture. We are getting to know more about celestial bodies, start formation and astronomy. At the same time we are strengthening the education in the island by increasing the knowledge of new technologies as well as providing livelihood opportunities to the poorest of the island.”
“My love and passion for this place have grown more deep, the more i touch and enjoy its magical nature, I see a unique miraculous beauty that is so uplifting to my pride as a Camiguingnon. Camiguin is becoming more diverse, technologically inclined and becoming more connected internationally, this is the opportunity to share the experience of what this Island can offer.
“When little thing shines, its no longer little though its size remains.” The birth of Kilaha is also the birth of more hopes and opportunities who value diversity, culture, education, progress, promotion and preservation keeping the equilibrium between the role of nature and the people without compromise. There is more to explore and discover , there is more to do , and there is more to share…and that’s what Kilaha is here for.”
